Why I fitness

As a 43 year old dad, husband and business owner I value fitness as an integral part of my life. While the benefits are many, the reasons I hold such a non- negotiable fitness regiment might surprise you.

1. Endorphins and energy: The natural high post run or metcon as endorphins elevate both my mood and boosts energy levels, keeping me motivated throughout the day.

2. Mental clarity and mood regulation: Exercise keeps my mind sharp providing a sense of mental clarity and emotional balance. When I’m feeling low energy or “moody” I often reach for my running shoes or a barbell instead of a liquid fix.

3. Friends and connection: Fitness has introduced me to an amazing group of like-minded individuals. And my wonderful wife, who I met and courted over many runs, rides and rock climbing adventures.

4. Mobility and range of motion: Maintaining and improving my mobility ensures I can move freely and efficiently. This expression of full range of motion sets me up to be more resilient to injury as well as be a piggyback giver for as long as possible.

5. Strength and endurance: Building strength and endurance allows me to tackle physical challenges with confidence and ease. I never want to say no because the adventure is too hard, too long or I’m not fit enough.

6. Unique perspective and confidence: Fitness allows me to see and experience the world in ways others might miss. I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the backcountry of the Alps in Europe, glacier run offs in Mount Hood and high country crystal blue lakes all because of my fitness.

Interestingly, the desire to look better with my shirt off is far down on the list. However, by “fitnessing” for these reasons, the aesthetic, athletic body naturally follows. For me, it’s about so much more than appearance – I’d rather feel strong and capable than just look good without being able to perform.

I’ve found by tying my goals to more intrinsic feelings, ones that are not fleeting, I can readily maintain my training for longer.
