Maintaining and building muscle after 50

When Coach Jonathan, now our Head of Operations, first walked into Woodslawn a few years ago, he was searching for change. What he found ended up transforming far more than his fitness. It reshaped his health, his perspective on what’s possible, and, maybe most importantly, how he sees and supports others in their own journeys.

What’s remarkable is how quickly he’s grown not just in strength and endurance ( he completed his first ultra trail marathon at age 59!) , but in his understanding of movement and his ability to help others move, feel, and live better.

Recently, Jonathan earned his Pain-Free Performance Specialist Certification (PPSC) a program designed to help people build resilience as they age, maintain strength and independence, and stay active for life.

The certification focuses on six key movement patterns that form the foundation of everything we do: hinge, squat, lunge, push, pull, and carry. These patterns aren’t just essential for living a full, active life, they’re critical for building strength and maintaining lean muscle as we get older.

When one of these patterns breaks down, maybe your hips feel tight in a squat or your shoulders pinch during a press, you notice it. Over time, those small limitations can turn into big barriers that keep you from doing what you love.

It’s part science, part art, and 100% about keeping you moving well.

Combined with Jonathan’s experience, both as an athlete who started his fitness journey later in life and as a coach working with those at the beginning of theirs, he brings a unique ability to help others not just maintain as they age, but exceed what they thought was possible.
