How to Keep Training Pain-Free After 50

Recently coach Jonathan completed a certification through PPSC, a certification for coaches and trainers that teaches how to design and coach strength and conditioning programs focused on movement quality, longevity, and injury prevention. Not only does this arm him further with many of the current members he works with, it also hits home as he started his fitness journey after 50- and has seen amazing results.

Q: Why do workouts start to feel “off” as we age?
A: I’ve learned that once you hit your 50s, little things start to add up, old injuries, tight hips, or years of sitting at a desk. Movements that once felt great, like squats or presses, can suddenly feel stiff or off. It’s not that your body can’t handle training anymore—it just needs a smarter, more intentional approach.

Q: What is the Pain-Free Performance Specialist Certification (PPSC)?
A: The PPSC is a certification I recently completed to deepen my understanding of how to help people move and perform better—without pain. It’s built around the idea that most injuries come from poor movement patterns, not bad luck. As someone who’s been training and coaching for decades, I can tell you that learning to identify and correct those patterns early makes all the difference.

Q: How does this apply at Woodslawn Fitness?
A: I’ve started integrating subtle upgrades in our warm-ups, movement prep, and even the way I cue your lifts. These tweaks come directly from what I’ve learned through the PPSC. Every adjustment—how we brace, hinge, or position ourselves—is intentional. My goal is to help you train safely and confidently for years, not just weeks or months.

Q: Why does this matter?
A: Pain is one of the biggest reasons people stop training, and I’ve seen it happen too often. With the PPSC framework, we can take control before that happens. The better you move, the better you perform—and the longer you can keep doing what you love. I’m proof of that at 59; consistency and smart training beat intensity alone every time.

Q: Have you used these principles yourself?
A: Absolutely. When I trained for my first 50K trail race, it wasn’t sheer grit that got me across the finish line—it was learning to move efficiently, recover well, and stay injury-free mile after mile. The same principles that carried me through that race are the ones I use with every athlete I coach at Woodslawn Fitness.

See you in the gym or on the trail!
